Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with underserved communities being disproportionately affected. In Nigeria, areas such as Taraba State face significant challenges in managing cardiovascular health due to a lack of awareness, limited access to healthcare facilities, and low levels of health education (Emmanuel et al., 2023). Nurses, as key healthcare providers, play an essential role in promoting public health and educating communities on the prevention and management of diseases like hypertension, heart disease, and stroke (Nwachukwu & Anosike, 2024).
The promotion of cardiac health awareness by nurses is vital, particularly in underserved communities where access to medical care is limited. Nurses can engage in various activities such as conducting educational campaigns, providing lifestyle modification advice, and offering screening programs for early detection of risk factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol (Olumide et al., 2023). This study aims to explore the role of nurses in promoting cardiac health awareness in underserved communities in Taraba State, assessing their contributions to preventing CVDs and improving community health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria, especially in underserved regions like Taraba State, there is a lack of effective public health education on heart health. Nurses are in a strategic position to address this gap by leading awareness programs and providing vital information on prevention strategies. However, their roles in promoting cardiac health awareness in underserved communities have not been extensively researched. This study seeks to examine how nurses contribute to cardiac health promotion in Taraba State and identify factors that can enhance their effectiveness in these efforts.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in promoting cardiac health awareness in underserved communities in Taraba State.
2. To evaluate the impact of nurses’ health education initiatives on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in these communities.
3. To identify the challenges nurses face in promoting cardiac health awareness in underserved areas and suggest solutions.
Research Questions
1. What role do nurses play in promoting cardiac health awareness in underserved communities in Taraba State?
2. How effective are nurses' health education initiatives in preventing cardiovascular diseases in these communities?
3. What challenges do nurses face in promoting cardiac health awareness in underserved communities, and how can these challenges be addressed?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses’ health education initiatives in underserved communities significantly improve awareness of cardiovascular disease prevention.
2. Nurses play a vital role in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases through their awareness programs in underserved areas.
3. The challenges faced by nurses in promoting cardiac health awareness in Taraba State can be mitigated through targeted interventions and support.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in underserved communities in Taraba State and their role in promoting cardiac health awareness. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting by nurses and the difficulty in measuring the long-term impact of awareness programs on CVD prevention.
